Bionic Commando Rearmed: I will have A Grappling Hook

Bionic Commando was a NES game that I used to see from time to time but never played.  This version of Bionic Commando is rearmed with upgraded graphics and an all around revamp. If you enjoy side-scrolling shooter games then Bionic Commando Rearmed is a fun and cheap revisit to a classic.

Bionic Commando Rearmed brief

The game is based in the future where you are on a mission to rescue Super Joe.  Super Joe has been captured by the Imperials and it’s your job to get him back. Your name is Nathan Spencer and you have a bionic arm which has a built in grappling hook. The game has challenging components where you need your bionic arm to solve puzzles and proceed onward.

Bionic Commando Rearmed hacking

After selecting the mission that you would like to be parachuted into you will need to figure the controls out and get moving. Some of the missions will only require you to get to the far right of the screen when some will have you complete objectives such as hacking a terminal to receive information. The terminal hacking is actually pretty fun once you figure it out and has Pokemon ice maze vibes to it.

Bionic Commando Rearmed Inventory

Throughout Bionic Commando Rearmed you will collect items which give you more special abilities or enhance your current abilities. You will also collect lives which are nice to keep handy while your learning the mechanics.

The challenge rooms are obstacle courses where you can compete online with other players to get high scores. The rooms really help you improve your grappling and other skills.

While traveling from mission to mission you have a chance to be ambushed and you will have to fight your way through it to continue. During these ambushes enemies will instantly spawn until you destroy the truck with the mounted machine gun at the end of the level.

Overall the game made me pretty aggravated for about 3 main reasons which would include the clunky controls(Non-WASD Controls), endless ambushes(Sometimes two between every mission and they are the same thing every time), and the accuracy needed for some of the jumping puzzles. The game has a lot of great game play if you can live with the games minor annoyances. If you would like to see a better layout for your controls check it out here.

Bionic Commando Rearmed is a fun game to play with a friend on steam controllers but I wouldn’t recommend it on alone with a keyboard and mouse. If the game is in a bundle or greatly discounted I would recommend giving it a try.
